What to Wear to a Massage (and Where Your Clothes Go)

Not sure what to wear to a massage, or what happens with your clothes once you are in the room? Here is the simple, no-awkwardness answer from our Corpus Christi spa.

Quick answer

Wear whatever is comfortable to arrive in — there is no dress code. In the room, you undress only as far as you feel comfortable, and a sheet covers you the entire time with just the area being worked on uncovered. Shiatsu can be done fully over the sheet or light clothing, so you never have to undress at all if you prefer.

“What do I wear?” is the question people are most likely to ask a friend rather than the spa, which is exactly why we want to answer it plainly. Whether you are coming from a lecture at the Island University, a shift at the hospital on Saratoga, or a morning on Mustang Island, here is what to put on, what comes off, and how the sheet works — so the only thing you have to think about is relaxing.

What to wear on the way in

Anything. Shorts and flip-flops from the beach, scrubs, a suit, coveralls from the plant — every one of those walks through our door in a normal week. There is no dress code and nothing to change into beforehand. The one practical tip is to choose something easy to slip back on afterward, since you will feel relaxed and possibly a little slow-moving.

If you wear jewelry, a watch, or glasses, you will take them off in the room, so a pocket or small bag helps. Long hair is easier tied back. That is about the extent of the preparation.

Undressing to your comfort level

Once you are in the private room, your therapist steps out and closes the door. “Undress to your comfort level” means exactly what it says: some guests remove everything, many keep underwear on, and some leave more on than that. All are fine. There is no correct amount, and your therapist will not comment on it either way.

You then lie on the table under the top sheet — face-down to start for most services — and your therapist knocks before coming back in. If you are ever unsure what to do, just ask through the door; it happens all the time.

How draping with the sheet works

Draping is the part that puts most first-timers at ease once they see it. You are covered by a sheet from the moment your therapist enters until the moment they leave. Only the area being worked on is uncovered — the back while the back is being massaged, one leg at a time, an arm — and it is covered again before moving on. The sheet is tucked as you turn over so nothing is exposed in the process.

This is standard for every oil-based style we offer: Swedish, Relaxation, Deep Tissue, Sports, and Trigger Point. It is also why the room temperature is kept warm; you should feel comfortable under the sheet, and if you do not, say so and we will adjust it.

Shiatsu: no undressing needed

If the thought of undressing is the thing keeping you from booking, Shiatsu is the answer. It uses rhythmic pressure from the thumbs, fingers, and palms rather than gliding strokes, and no oil is involved. That means it can be done entirely over the sheet or over light, loose clothing — a T-shirt and soft shorts or leggings are ideal.

You still get a full-body session, working the back, shoulders, hips, and legs, and the steady pressure is firm enough to feel without going deep. Many guests choose it precisely because they can arrive, lie down, and be finished without a wardrobe change. It runs $50 for 30 minutes or $70 for 60, just like everything else.

A few other things guests ask

Oil: for the styles that use it, we use a light massage oil and wipe away excess before you dress. If you have somewhere to be afterward and would rather not carry any residue, there is a shower on site. Just mention it when you book.

Talking: some guests chat, most go quiet, and neither is wrong. The only thing worth speaking up about is comfort — pressure, temperature, a spot that needs more time or one you would rather we skip. Your therapist will ask early and then let you drift.

Timing: try to arrive about five minutes ahead so you can use the restroom, put your things away, and settle in without feeling hurried. Have a little water afterward, and plan for a slow first few minutes when you sit up.

That is the whole answer. Wear what you have on, undress as far as you like, stay covered by a sheet, and if you prefer to stay dressed entirely, book Shiatsu. The room is private, the door is closed, and nobody is watching the clock.
